A successful organization that thrives depends on strong, competent, structured leadership supported by the body it serves. A church congregation has a responsibility to help support its leadership, leading to long-term success, cooperation, and ministry.
When there is open communication between you as a leadership team and the community you’ve been given stewardship of, there’s a beautiful cooperation that’s allowed to unfold. A large part of this is making sure expectations are clearly understood and everyone is on the same page.
Despite the leadership team being the headship of the church, your ability to lead is very much so impacted by your congregation’s willingness and cooperation in following. It’s important for the members of your church to understand what is expected of them and how that plays into the overall function of the church.
I’ll elaborate on a few of these responsibilities and their importance below, though there are many more I’d recommend including in the policy document you create for the running of your church.
Attend Church Services Regularly
Though it seems obvious, this requirement is the basis for being able to have an informed opinion on and part in what’s happening in the church. A clear expectation needs to be set with your congregation that attendance on a regular basis is crucial. Though someone may have the best of intentions and thoroughly believe they have insight to share, if they aren’t regularly making a habit of showing up to be part of the body, their thoughts may not be entirely reliable, as they may not be based on the latest teachings and goings-on at the church.
When your body meets regularly, not only can it avoid unnecessary misunderstandings based on misconceptions, it can also build a strong cohesion and bond between your members that helps prevent these issues in the first place.
Support the Church and Pastor Financially
Tithing is a biblical requirement of believers, but it’s one that is often overlooked. This has an impact, not just on the believer’s faith, but on the church as a whole. Just as any other organization, money coming in is essential for everyday operations in a body of Christ as well as any ministry or outreach opportunities.
As members of a church, there is a responsibility to follow God’s command of supporting the church financially, which in turn allows the church to fulfill its obligations to and support of the believer. It’s a beautiful, God-ordained design that allows the proper function of the living, breathing organism that is the church.
Show Love and Respect Toward the Pastor
Authority can only be effective in its mission when those under that authority respect it. When a congregation has love and respect for its pastor, the relationship is able to blossom into the functional, Christ-serving instrument it’s supposed to be. Establishing an expectation for the attitude your congregation sets the tone for how the pastor and member are to interact, making it easier for the focus to be on the important things: ministry, outreach, and a hunger for the Word of God.
